|概要||The course will examine a number of issues that are important in the overall development of the region. These include issues of social and economic security and political developments involving types of government. The course will examine some of the larger countries in the region like Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand.|
|科目の到達目標||The course will give students greater familiarity with some of the developmental issues in Southeast Asia at the individula country level as well as on a comparative basis.|
|受講要件||Some background training in the social sciences.|
General fluency in English and preparedness for oral participation and presentations.
Readings for the class will be provided ahead of time for the students to familiarize themselves with the discussion topics.
The breakdown of the topics for the class is as follows:
1. Introduction (1 week)
2. Theories of development and associated issues/ problems (2 weeks)
3. Political development – Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Thailand (3 weeks)
4. Economic development – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand (3 weeks)
5. Social development – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand (3 weeks)
6. Common trends and issues (2 weeks)
7. Conclusion (1 week)
General class discussions and presentations worth 40% of course grade.
One review article worth 20% of course grade
One long essay worth 40% of course grade

|担当者プロフィール||Specialist in Southeast politics and foreign policy with 25 years of post-doctoral teaching, research and publication experience including 13 years at the National University of Singapore from 1990 to 2003.|
