概要 An overview of current research on language use in social contexts, focusing particularly on issues related to intercultural communication. Emphasis on English-Japanese comparison.
科目の到達目標 To develop students' awareness of variation in laguage use in social contexts. To introduce and provide practice in sociolinguistic/pragmatic analysis of discourse and language use.
受講要件 Ability to discuss and write about academic subjects in English
事前・事後学修の内容 Class meetings will be conducted in a seminar style, mainly in English, to include:
1) Discussion of readings
2) Individual presentations on specific topics
3) Supervised research projects by individuals or small groups
講義内容 Specific topics for study will be selected from among the following according to student interest:

1) Style, context and register
2) Speech functions, politeness and cross-cultural communication
3) Gender, politeness and stereotypes
4) Language, cognition and culture
5) Analyzing discourse
6) Attitudes and applications
7) Sociolinguistic competence, analysis and universals

An Introduction to Sociolinguistics, 4th edition, by Janet Homes, Pearson Education, 2013.
担当者プロフィール Carol Rinnert earned her Ph.D. in linguistics at State University of New York at Buffalo. Her main research areas are applied linguistics for Teaching English as a Foreign/second Language (ESL/EFL), cross-cultural pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. Her current research interest focuses on the development of academic writing ability in multiple languages.
