講義の目的 The course style: lectures.
This course is a broad survey of positive and negative developments that have occurred in the international relations of Southeast Asia after World War Two. The issues of conflict that will be examined are the Three Indochina Wars from 1946 to 1989 These developments dominated the international relations of Southeast Asia in the Cold War period. The second conflict that will be examined is the Indonesian military confrontation against the Federation of Malaysia from 1963 to 1967.
For issues of cooperation the course will examine the formation of ASEAN in 1967, its expansion in the 1990s and regionalism
到達目標 Students taking this class will learn the international politics of Southeast Asia from the end of World War II. They will be able to better appreciate the conflicts that happened in Indochina and become familiar with the previous bilateral conflict between Indonesia and Malaysia. They will also learn about the peace initiatives undertaken through ASEAN and East Asian regionalism in the wider Asia-Pacific region since the 1990s.

事前・事後学修 Topics for the review will be given in class while the topics for the research essays will be arrived at in consultation individually with students. All assigned readings will be made available in class well ahead of the discussion topics.

評価方法・基準 The course requirements consist of extensive class participation in discussions and presentations that will be worth 40 percent of the course grade. For the remaining 60 percent, students enrolled in the course will have to write a review article weighted at 20 percent and a long research paper that will be worth the remaining 40 percent.

担当者プロフィール Dr. Ganesan originally taught Political Science and Southeast Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore from 1990 to 2003. Since 2004 he has been teaching for the Hiroshima Peace Institute and at the Hiroshima City University’s Faculty of International Studies. From 2011 to 2013 he also held an invited Visiting Proffesorship at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo to teach a postgraduate module on the Government and Politics of Southeast Asia. .

備考 Dr. Ganesan’s research and publication interests are in sources of interstate and intrastate tensions and conflict in Southeast Asia. His current research focus is on the ethnic peace process in Myanmar and the impact of democratization on civil conflicts. He has authored and edited 10 books ad more than 75 internationally refereed book chapters and journal articles.
